Kazakhstan thwarts smuggling of endangered falcons

Astana, Nov 16 (EFE).- Authorities at Astana international airport on Wednesday intercepted luggage containing 32 live birds of an endangered species of falcon bound for the United Arab Emirates, the Kazakh government said.

The saker falcons were concealed inside four large compartmented pieces of luggage, accompanied by bottles of frozen water to allow the birds to withstand the high temperatures in the UAE, where the species is prized for its hunting skills.

"Border guards confiscated the cargo, comprising living saker falcons, during the loading of baggage" onto Air Arabia Flight 252 from Astana to Sharjah, according to the press office of the Border Service of Kazakhstan's National Security Committee.

The guards inspected the four large pieces of luggage after noting the absence of registration tags, the press office said.

The falcons would fetch an estimated 50,000 euros ($53,457) each on the black market in the UAE, the Border Service said.

BirdLife International, a conservation group, lists the saker falcon as an endangered species due to a rapid decline in the population of the birds, especially in Central Asia.

2 Russians seek asylum in U.S. after reaching remote Alaskan island in small boat, officials say

Two Russians who said they fled the country to avoid compulsory military service have requested asylum in the U.S. after landing on a remote Alaskan island in the Bering Sea, Alaska U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski's office said Thursday. Karina Borger, a spokesperson for Murkowski, said by email that the office has been in communication with the U.S. Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection and that "the Russian nationals reported that they fled one of the coastal communities on the east coast of Russia to avoid compulsory military service." ICE officials are currently holding the two Russian nationals who arrived in Alaska in a small boat on Tuesday, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson confirmed to CBS News' Camilo Montoya-Galvez. The individuals were transported to Anchorage for vetting and screening after DHS was alerted of their arrival by local officials. Man killed outside British school in Madrid after being shot at least 10 times

Madrid, Mar 12 (EFE).- A man was shot at least 10 times and killed on a road just outside the British Council School in Madrid on Monday by unknown assailants who fled immediately after the incident, regional emergency services said.
Sources close to the investigation told EFE that the victim, a 43-year-old, was in a car with a woman, who was described as being of Colombian nationality and his partner, after dropping one or more children off at a school in Pozuelo de Alarcón, an affluent suburb to the west of the Spanish capital, when he was attacked.
"We can confirm the death of a 43-year-old man in Pozuelo," the Madrid regional emergency services said on Twitter. "He has at least 10 gunshot wounds," the statement said.
An investigation was launched by the national police after witness evidence pointed to two men on a motorcycle who were believed to have been behind the shooting.
According to security sources, witnesses saw a man riding pillion on the back of the motorcycle fire multiple times at the victim before the pair rode off.
The victim was reportedly able to leave his car but died on the road almost immediately, while his partner was left unharmed.
Investigators are now establishing whether the witness testimonies can be confirmed and gathering evidence to determine what happened, EFE was told.

“Nuestra empresa ha presentado una oferta que simplemente no es aceptable. Estamos en un aeropuerto internacional y vivimos en una región donde los alquileres son muy caros y los salarios son demasiado bajos en comparación”, ha declarado Raimund Istepski, empleado de Fraport Security Services.

Los trabajadores exigen un salario de 16 euros la hora, frente a los 10 actuales. La patronal les ofrece 12,76 euros la hora.

“Doce horas de retraso. Nuestro avión ha sido cancelado. Estamos de vuelta y ahora aquí... Es increíble”, ha señalado una viajera francesa.

El paro está siendo seguido por el 90% del personal de seguridad del aeropuerto de Frankfurt. Esta huelga es una advertencia para no implicar al personal a nivel nacional, si no avanzan las negociaciones, que deben retomar el próximo 5 de marzo.

At least 2 dead, 20 injured in Barcelona terror attack after van hits crowds

Barcelona, Aug 17 (EFE).- At least two people were killed and 20 others were injured when a van ran over pedestrians in Barcelona's Rambla boulevard on Thursday in what police confirmed was a terror attack.

Security sources said they were looking for two suspects, one of whom was the driver of the van, who managed to flee on foot and barricaded himself inside a bar armed with a rifle.

The second suspect managed to escape, the sources told EFE, adding that they were searching for someone wearing a blue and white sweater.

"We can confirm this was a terror attack. The counter-terror protocol has been activated," tweeted regional police.

Police said the van rammed into several vehicles before barreling down the tree-lined central pedestrian-only area of the Rambla.

Officers from the regional Mossos d'Esquadra and emergency services were deployed to the area, which is at the heart of the city's touristic center and is visited by thousands every day.

Police sources said they were searching for a second van that the suspects may have rented to use as a getaway vehicle.

Police also denied rumors of a shooting at a nearby shopping center.

The regional government asked that metro and train stations in the area be closed to the public.

Spanish state broadcaster RTVE spoke to witnesses who said the van had mounted the central pedestrian part of the boulevard and raced towards crowds.

Television images showed several people being attended by medical first attenders and baby chairs lying abandoned on the road.
