LISZT "TODTENTANZ" BERTRAND CHAMAYOU & FRANKFURT RADIO Sy.O. JÉRÉMIE RHORER dir. LIVE
Another source of inspiration for the young Liszt was the famous fresco "Triumph of Death" by Francesco Traini (at Liszt's time attributed to Andrea Orcagna and today also to Buonamico Buffalmacco) in the Campo Santo, Pisa. Liszt had eloped to Italy with his mistress, the Countess d’Agoult, and in 1838 he visited Pisa. Only ten years later, Liszt’s first sketches materialized into a complete version of his Totentanz. Revisions followed in 1853 and 1859, and its final form was first performed at The Hague on 15 April 1865 by Liszt’s student Hans von Bülow, to whom the work is (Wikipedia)

Oh..! HILARY HAHN & FRANKFURT RSyO PAAVO JäRVI dir. BRAHMS CONCERTO Op.77 + encore LIVE april 2014
The technical demands on the soloist are formidable, with generous use of multiple stopping, broken chords, rapid scale passages, and rhythmic variation. The difficulty may to some extent be attributed to the composer's being chiefly a pianist.[citation needed]
Nevertheless, Brahms chose the violin-friendly key of D major for his concerto. Since the violin is tuned G'D'A'E, the open strings, resonating sympathetically, add brilliance to the sound. For the same reason, composers of many eras (e.g. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Prokofiev, Korngold and Khachaturian) have written violin concertos in either D major or D minor. SHOSTAKOVICH CHAMBER SYMPHONY (TRANSCRIPTION OF R.BARSHAI) RFrPhO HEINZ HOLLIGER dir. LIVE 1996
The first movement opens with the DSCH motif which was Shostakovich's musical signature. This slow, extremely sad theme can also be heard in his Cello Concerto No. 1, Symphony No. 10, Violin Concerto No. 1, Symphony No. 15, and Piano Sonata No. 2. The motif is used in every movement of this quartet, and is the basis of the faster theme of the third movement.
The final statement of the DSCH motif at the end of the fifth movement
Problems playing this file? See media help.
The work is filled with quotations of other pieces by Shostakovich: the first movement quotes his Symphony No. 1 and Symphony No. 5; the second movement uses a Jewish theme first used by Shostakovich in his Piano Trio No. 2; the third movement quotes the Cello Concerto No. 1; and the fourth movement quotes the 19th century revolutionary song "Tormented by Grievous Bondage" and the aria Seryozha, my love from Shostakovich's opera, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. The fifth contains a play upon a motive also from Lady Macbeth.
It has been transcribed by Rudolf Barshai for string orchestra, in which version it is known as Chamber Symphony in C minor (Op. 110a). (Wikipedia)Ver video "SHOSTAKOVICH CHAMBER SYMPHONY (TRANSCRIPTION OF R.BARSHAI) RFrPhO HEINZ HOLLIGER dir. LIVE 1996"

Dorfschwalben aus Österreich, Walzer, Op. 164 - Josef Strauss
"Village Swallows of Austria". In the summer of 1864 Josef Strauss had succeeded in finding an entrepreneur in Breslau who offered him a contract for October of 1864, following the steps of his brother Johann of enjoying triumphs far from Vienna. This inspired Josef that by September 1864 he was able to offer several works which again revealed the complexity of his talent. Topping the list was the waltz Dorfschwalben aus Österreich. This waltz is the result of Josef's inspiration by reading the novel "Dorfschwalben aus Österreich" by August Silberstein, a volume of village stories reflecting the deep spirit and cheerful humour in the life of common people of Austrian countryside. August Silberstein had been a long time acquaintance of Josef Strauss and dedicated this waltz to him. The waltz reveals the closeness of the composer to nature and stands at the end of a long development of the waltz form. Dorfschwalben aus Österreich was performed for the first time on 6th September 1864, at the concert of the Strauss orchestra in the Viennese imperial Volksgarten, and shortly thereafter was repeated in the Neue Welt in Heitzing. Since that time the work has never disappeared from the repertoire of entertainment and dance orchestras and is also performed time and again by symphony orchestras all over the world.

Ravel Piano Concerto In G Major Argerich Dutoit Orchestre National De France Frankfurt 9 9 1990
The concerto was deeply infused with jazz idioms and harmonies, which, at the time, were highly popular in Paris as well as the United States, where Ravel was traveling on a piano tour. After his well-received tour, Ravel wanted to give the first public performance this new work himself. However, health issues precluded this possibility, with his preparatory practice of Liszt's and Chopin's etudes leading to fatigue. He then planned a premiere for March 9, 1931, in Amsterdam, but these plans also were canceled due to work on the Concerto for the Left Hand, his many public appearances, and his performances of his other works.
Eventually, Ravel offered the premiere and dedicated the concerto to Marguerite Long, who was known for her performances of the works of Fauré and Debussy and had earlier asked Ravel for a new work. She received the score on November 11, 1931, and played the concerto on January 14, 1932, with Ravel conducting the Orchestre Lamoureux. A few days after this highly successful premiere, Ravel and Long started a tour of twenty cities in Europe, where it was received with consistent enthusiasm.
The first North American performances were given simultaneously on April 22, 1932, by both the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra at their home concert halls. (Wikipedia)Ver video "Ravel Piano Concerto In G Major Argerich Dutoit Orchestre National De France Frankfurt 9 9 1990"
