Magic sand is a toy made from sand coated with a hydrophobic compound. The presence of this hydrophobic compound causes the grains of sand to adhere to one another and form cylinders (to minimize surface area) when exposed to water. When the sand is removed from water, it is completely dry and free flowing.\r

Trimethylsilanol - These properties are achieved with ordinary beach sand, which contains tiny particles of pure silica, and exposing it to vapors of trimethylsilanol (CH3)3SiOH, an organosilicon compound. Upon exposure, the trimethylsilane compound bonds to the silica particles while forming water. The exteriors of the sand grains are thus coated with hydrophobic groups.\r

Magic sand was originally developed to trap ocean oil spills near the shore. This would be done by sprinkling Magic sand on floating petroleum, which would then mix with the oil and make it heavy enough to sink. Due to the expense of production, it is not being used for this purpose. It has also been tested by utility companies in Arctic regions as a foundation for junction boxes, as it never freezes. It can be also used as an aerating medium for potted plants.\r

The earliest reference to waterproof sand is in the 1915 book The Boy Mechanic Book 2 published by Popular Mechanics. The Boy Mechanic states waterproof sand was invented by East Indian magicians. The sand was made by mixing heated sand with melted wax. The wax would repel water when the sand was exposed to water. \r

11 Years Living Off-Grid in an Earthship Style House

Hélène Dubé and her partner Alain Neveu from Es-Cargo ( have lived off-grid in Quebec, Canada for 11 years in a self-built earthship style home made of recycled tires filled with earth and large south-facing windows.\r

Their water is gravity fed from a spring-filled cistern placed up the hill from their home, their power comes from solar energy, and they use a composting outhouse toilet.\r
\r
For refrigeration, they make their own ice during the winter by freezing water in recycled windshield washer jugs outside, and then they store them in a root cellar inside unplugged chest freezers insulated with sawdust. They manage to keep their food cold with these homemade ice blocks from January to July, and then they get ice blocks from a neighbour. \r
\r
For hot water they use approximately 200 lbs of propane each year.\r
\r
For heat they have a homemade rocket stove that is an efficient way to burn wood, and they also use it as a cooktop in the winter.\r
\r
They would eventually like to be self sufficient in their food production and have gardens, hens, and theyve begun to build an aquaponic system as well. But they do find that growing all of their own food, running workshops, and staying on top of all their other projects to be an incredible amount of work for just two people. \r

Theyre hoping to attr more people to the property to form a small community of inspired and like-minded permaculture enthusiasts.\r

Iban tan bajo que no los vió el radar del Sea Dart, sino hasta los 19kms. aprox. Pero además de eso tuvieron suerte u ocurrió un milagro, no se puede saber. Los ingleses habían dispuesto esas dos naves como una provocación, muy expuestas, pero en realidad se trataba de una trampa mortal. El destructor HMS Coventry y la Fragata HMS Broadsword estaban equipados cada un con misiles Sea Wolf y Sea Dart, Sea Cat, lo que elevaba las posibilidades de derrivo casi al 90%.
Pero a veces las cosas fallan o no sé que pasa. Estos tipos siguieron a pesar de eso, para usar las palabras del propio Comodoro Carballo, "PARA ADELANTE Y CON FE." Y las más sofisiticadas armas del mundo terminaron siendo fierros viejos.

The XC60 performs smoothly on the slalom thanks to the ESC, which works subtly enough to not
interfere with the driver's inputs. The steering does not have an accurate feel but it is nicely weighted.
