Classic Game Room HD - SEGA 32X review part 1

Part 1 of 2. Classic Game Room HD reviews the SEGA 32X add-on for the Sega Genesis 16-bit video game console. Also available for the Sega Mega Drive, the 32X boosts the POWER of the Genesis.... or something like that. It plays 32X games which are typically larger, smoother and even better looking than awesome Sega Genesis video games. The 32X suffered from many problems though, not the least of which was its requirement to use two power supplies. The 32X works with the model 1 and model 2 Sega Genesis but requires a special 32X cable to work properly. The 32X is powered by the common Sega MK-3102 power supply and covers the player's room with wires and nonsense. Sega's biggest mistake? Even though the 32X was a commercial disaster and is regarded as a joke there are some amazing games available for the Sega 32X like Doom, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Racing Deluxe, Afterburner and Metal Head. The library of games is smaller than what you'll find for the Genesis but there are some real gems in there like Cosmic Carnage. If you can find the cables to make it work, pick up a 32X for a song these days and you'll be surprised at how good it actually is, even if it is a complete clusterf---.

Sega accidentally released a beta of Sonic 4 Episode 2 on Steam, rather than the pre-order. So, here we go. Its missing some graphics (notice some white trees and white buildings in the first world only), but otherwise its complete. \r

This game is really good. The mechanics are fixed over Episode 1, the 2-player mode (I didnt play it while recording) is ually pretty neat from what I tested of it, and the level design is a LOT better than Episode 1 with a lot of creative ideas. Catchier music too, though still in that synthesized old-school style they went for that Im not really a fan of.\r

Anyway, Sega yanked the beta from Steam, but still, hopefully these videos will convince you that this game is worth getting when it officially comes out.

Galaxy Force (ギャラクシーフォース?) is a sprite-scaling rail shooter arcade game, released by Sega in 1988 and built upon the Sega Y Board. The game which is in the tradition of Sega's successful Space Harrier is set in space. The game was ported in 1989 to the Sega Master System and in 1990 to the Mega Drive/Genesis, Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum, FM Towns, Sega Saturn and PlayStation 2 platforms.

Two other versions of the arcade game were released as Galaxy Force II Deluxe Edition and Galaxy Force Super Deluxe Edition. Galaxy Force II was also released on the Virtual Console via Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in Japan on February 3, 2009, in Europe on May 1, 2009 and in North America on May 11, 2009.[6] Galaxy Force II was released on Nintendo 3DS as part of the 3D Classics series. It was released in July 2013 in Japan and in December 2013 in Australia, Europe and North America.

The evil Fourth Empire, ruled by Halcyon, begins a campaign of galactic conquest, after laying waste to almost all of the star systems in the galaxy, An interstellar organization, known as the Space Federation, launches Galaxy Force, an elite starfighter corps specializing in space combat to free the galaxy from the oppressive rule of Halcyon and the Fourth Empire. A lone fighter wages a one-man war against Halcyon and his forces.

Description from the American release:

"In this distant Galaxy exist many systems harboring life. Trade and communication have arisen between these star systems, as has a great, dark force threatening these distant civilizations. To fight this dark menace the Space Federation was formed, but has met with little success. The enemy calls itself THE FOURTH EMPIRE and has now attacked JUNOS, jewel of the Galaxy. The JUNOS star system, once so beautiful... is only ashes now. And on these ashes THE FOURTH EMPIRE is building the strongest fortress of all time, from which to complete their conquest of the galaxy. The Space Federation must end this evil menace! Thus is launched Galaxy Force, to strike a hammer blow against the forces threatening civilization. Fortunately, having done this duty of saving JUNOS people and destroying THE FOURTH EMPIRE, a combatant of Galaxy Force returned to the ship."

Regreso al Pasado TV 2x02: The Story of Thor

 
Si llegó a existir un género en el que el catálogo de Mega Drive cojeara, ese fue sin duda el JRPG. La consola de 16 bits de Sega tuvo muy poco éxito en Japón, ya que cuando se lanzó en dicho mercado a finales de los 80 se encontró con que los usuarios que quisieron dar el salto de los 8 bits de Famicom a los 16 ya lo habían hecho un año atrás con la PC Engine, mientras que el resto de jugadores simplemente aguardaron el lanzamiento de Super Nintendo sin hacer caso alguno a la apuesta de Sega. Debido a ello, las compañías niponas no apostaron por ella, y la hora de programar un JRPG solo tenían a la SNES como objetivo. Eso sí, aunque se lanzaron muy pocos JRPGs en Mega Drive, los que vieron la luz poseían una calidad excelente, como es el caso del juego que hoy os acercamos: The Story of Thor.
La encargada de desarrollar el juego fue Ancient, compañía fundada por Tomo Koshiro. ¿Os suena el apellido? Normal, ya que se trataba de la madre del mismísimo Yuzo Koshiro, quien cogió las riendas de la desarrolladora poco después. Ancient estuvo involucrada en proyectos de la categoría de Sonic 1 para Master System y Game Gear, el inmortal Streets of Rage 2 o el mismísimo Shenmue, títulos que, por supuesto, contaban con el maestro Koshiro a cargo de la banda sonora. The Story of Thor no podía ser menos, así que ya desde el principio podemos estar seguros de que el juego derrocha calidad en temas musicales. El resto de apartados se encuentran también situados al mismo nivel de excelencia, por lo que The Story of Thor no solo es uno de los mejores (y escasos) JRPGs disponibles en la consola de Sega, sino también uno de sus mejores títulos a nivel general.
The Story of Thor nos sumerge en una aventura de acción de perspectiva cenital con toques roleros, al más puro estilo Zelda. Tomando influencias de leyendas y relatos árabes como Las Mil y Una Noches, aquí controlamos a un joven príncipe del lejano oriente que, debido a una de esas casualidades que tanto se daban en los años de los 16 bits, se topa con un brazalete de oro que encierra en su interior grandes poderes mágicos. Dicho brazalete perteneció mucho tiempo atrás a un mago, el cual lo usaba como contenedor de poder en su lucha contra un hechicero maligno que poseía un idéntico objeto, solo que plateado en lugar de dorado. Obviamente, si ha reaparecido el brazalete de oro también lo ha hecho el de plata. Y también estaba claro que su nuevo portador lo iba a usar para liarla parda, así que nos corresponderá a nosotros pararle los pies.
Nuestro personaje va armado con un cuchillo que usa con gran habilidad, aunque por el camino también podremos usar otras armas como espadas, bombas o ballestas. Eso sí, estas armas son de uso limitado, por lo que más tarde o más temprano volveremos a empuñar el cuchillo. Por supuesto, el brazalete que portamos también puede ser usado por nuestro protagonista.
