As the rapid aging of Asia’s population creates challenges for governments and societies, new opportunities are emerging for businesses serving the needs of the elderly and their caretakers.
While population aging is a global phenomenon, the Asian-Pacific region is expected to see a particularly drastic demographic change over the next few decades. The number of elderly persons in the region—already home to more than half of the world’s population aged 60 and over—is expected to triple to more than 1.2 billion by 2050, when one in four people in the region will be over 60 years old, according to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.
Across Asia, large corporations and entrepreneurs in various industries are racing to come up with new products and services for the elderly, while health-care-related businesses are seeing soaring demand. Kazakhstan reiterates anti-terrorism commitment with new code of conduct
United Nations, Sep 28 (EFE) .- Kazakh Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov addressed the 73rd UN General Assembly in Friday to stress Kazakhstan’s commitment to fight international terrorism and to present a new code of conduct signed by more than 70 countries and "open to signing by other states."
On the fourth day of the United Nations Assembly, Abdrakhmanov presented a new "Code of Conduct to Achieve a World Free of Terrorism" that which "invites all countries to coordinate closely in the fight against this evil", a document to which 70 states have already joined, he explained.
"We invite all of you to show your good will in the fight against this disastrous phenomenon," Abdrakhmanov told representatives of nearly 200 countries.
Kazakhstan has ratified 16 of the 19 UN instruments to combat terrorism, with measures taken for early accession to the remaining three treaties.
"A stronger global leadership in the fight against terrorism remains crucial, we must do more to address the roots of radicalization using the best practices and relevant instruments of the UN," said Abdrakhmanov.
The Kazakh minister also reported that his country is actively working "within the framework of the Joint Action Plan to Implement the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy (GCTS) in Central Asia."
Abdrakhmanov recalled that, in his speech before the General Assembly in 2015, the president of his country already expressed his desire to undertake several initiatives against terrorism.
He also said that this Assembly comes when "millions of people live under the shadow of frightful wars, as in Syria, Yemen and many other corners of the globe."
"Kazakhstan believes that war can never be a lasting solution to any problem, based on this conviction, we share the belief that the solution to the current crisis in Syria is Syria-led and inclusive politics," said the Kazakh foreign minister. . EFE

Earthshot Prize-winner's solution for world's plastic problem? Seaweed
Dubbed the "Oscars of the Earth," the Earthshot Prizes recognize and reward innovative projects addressing climate change and other serious environmental problems. This year's Earthshot for "Build a Waste-Free World" was awarded to the London-based Notpla — a little wordplay of "not plastic" — whose mission is to replace single-use plastic with single-use seaweed. Winning the Earthshot award for environmental innovation — and more than $1 million — was "completely surreal," said co-founder Pierre Paslier. "We have to look at it as a war effort," he said, "because the scale of climate challenge is something that threatens the whole world all at once. It's in the air, it's in water, it's in our blood." According to the United Nations, we produce 400 million tons of plastic waste every year. Half of that's used just once, then thrown away, much of it to remain hundreds of years after we are gone. "It's very slowly fragmenting and releasing all of these other chemicals that are present in

"Unprecedented rise in cholera outbreaks" forces "last-resort decision" on vaccine policy
Geneva — A shortage of cholera vaccines has forced a temporary shift to a one-dose strategy, from the usual two, in campaigns to fight a swelling number of outbreaks, the World Health Organization said Wednesday. The United Nations health agency said the "strained global supply of cholera vaccines" had pushed the International Coordinating Group (ICG), which manages emergency supplies of vaccines, to suspend the two-dose regimen. "The pivot in strategy will allow for the doses to be used in more countries, at a time of unprecedented rise in cholera outbreaks worldwide," WHO said in a statement. Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection in the small intestine causing sometimes fatal dehydration. It is generally contracted from food or water contaminated with vibrio cholera bacteria. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus pointed out to reporters that "29 countries have reported outbreaks this year, including 13 countries that did not have outbreaks last year." That compares with the fewer t

Assad urges halt to flow of terrorists to Syria and Iraq through Turkey
Damascus, Dec 11 (EFE).- Syrian President Bashar Assad, in an exclusive interview with EFE, stressed the need to halt the flow of terrorists that he said were arriving in Syria and Iraq through Turkey, as well as to block the terror financing that, in his view, was originating in Saudi Arabia.
"In Syria, we have more than 100 nationalities fighting with the extremists and terrorists, Al Qaeda and al-Nusra and others. The first step we should take in order to solve this problem is to stop the flood of terrorists, especially through Turkey to Syria and to Iraq, and of course we have to stop the flowing of money - Saudi money and other Wahhabi money and Qatari money - to those terrorists through Turkey," Assad said.
He also called for a halt to the flow of armaments and logistical support for groups battling Syrian government forces.
"We have to start with stopping the flow, and at the same time fighting terrorism from within Syria by the Syrian army and by whoever wants to support the Syrian army," Assad said.
That latter remark was a veiled reference to the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State that has carried out airstrikes against the jihadists in Syria for more than a year without any military coordination with Damascus.
Assad said organizations considered to be "terrorist around the world, like ISIS (Islamic State) or al-Nusra," have hundreds of millions of dollars and "a nearly full army like any other state," a situation he said was only possible due to the direct support of countries like Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
He said that if the goal is a quick end to the war, "and most of the world is saying now they want to see an end to this crisis," then pressure must be placed "on those countries that, you know them, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar."
"Then this conflict will end in less than a year, definitely," the Syrian president added.
Around 250,000 people have died since the Syrian civil war broke out in 2011, according to the United Nations and other organizations.

It is possible for these strange felines to grow whiskers and eyebrows but they very rarely do. These little less than adorable kitties, though some find them absolutely enchanting, are best known for features such as wedge-shaped heads, prominent cheekbones, large bulging eyeballs, muscular necks, pot bellies, paw pads and whiplike tails. You know, these creepy extroverted intelligent prune-looking kitties are starting to grow on me.\r
\r

This next breed of kitty is known for growing quite large by domestic standards sometimes weighing 11 pounds or more and appear, you guessed it, nearly exly like a miniature bobcat. Known for their intelligent nature, these kitties are ideal for training to walk on leashes and to play fetch, they can most commonly be found trailing after their owners like little obedient shadows. These smart kitties are said to be capable of understanding some human words and commands. Like the North American Bobcat, these adorable mounds of fuzz have black fur and skin on the bottom of their paws, tipped ears, stubby tails, black lips, white fur surrounding their black eye skin, white furry chins, and their spotted fur patterns have reddish tones sometimes mixed in. \r
