Astronomers detect sugar star just 400 light years from Earth

Berlin, Aug 29 (EFE).- An international team of astronomers have for the first time detected in outer space a simple sugar molecule similar to kind we put in our coffee. And fittingly, it was found in the Milky Way, about 400 light years from Earth, the European Space Observatory (ESO) said Wednesday.

The chances of a recently discovered mile-wide asteroid, forecast to hurtle towards Earth, actually hitting the planet are "minimal", a Nasa scientist said today.

But if it did, asteroid 2002 NT7 would strike on February 1 2019 unleashing tidal waves, massive fires, global volcanic activity and an electromagnetic pulse that would destroy most of the electronics on Earth.

Astronomers have given the object a 0.06 rating on the Palermo technical scale (a scale used to measure asteroid threats), making it the first to be given a positive value.

Astrónomos captan imágenes cercanas del lugar dónde nacen los planetas

Los astrónomos lograron sacar 15 imágenes de discos que forman planetas muy distantes alrededor de las estrellas situados a cientos de años luz de la Tierra. Las fotos de este tipo de discos son extremadamente raras y ayudarán a los astrónomos a entender mejor cómo se forman los sistemas planetarios.

El autor principal del estudio Jacques Kluska y sus colegas crearon las imágenes en el Observatorio Europeo Austral (ESO) en Chile utilizando una técnica llamada interferometría infrarroja. Con la ayuda del instrumento PIONIER de ESO, combinaron la luz recogida por cuatro telescopios en el observatorio de Very Large Telescope para hacer imágenes detalladas de los discos.
