How To Make Glow in the Dark Powder

How to make phosphorescent glow in the dark powder. Also known as luminescent, photoluminescent or simply glow powder. \r
\r
Warning: This experiment uses mildly toxic chemicals, wear gloves when handling them. In addition, the combustion reion must be performed outside or in a fume-hood due to the resulting smoke and gasses.\r
\r
For this experiment youll need:\r
Strontium Nitrate: \r
Aluminum Nitrate: \r
Purification by recrystalization: \r
Europium and dysprosium nitrates: \r
And youll need nitric acid to make the above nitrates: \r
\r
The procedure is relatively straightforward: 1.875g of aluminum nitrate nonahydrate with 530mg of strontium nitrate, 10.7mg of europium nitrate pentahydrate, 21.9mg of dysprosium nitrate pentahydrate and 30.9mg of boric acid are dissolved in 3mL of distilled water. 3.9g of pure urea is added and shaken until dissolved. The mixture is heated in a 1000watt microwave for 4 minutes. Eventually itll ignite and combust. The white ash is the glow powder.\r
\r
Can be used in Glow in the Dark Paint if crushed into a powder and mixed with an appropriate clear paint/resin/lacquer/glue.

Make Nitric Acid - The Complete Guide

We show 3 ways to make nitric acid based on two different chemical approaches both of which can be done using easily accessible materials.\r
\r
Warning: The procedures in this video produce large quantities of toxic gases and deal with highly corrosive acids. All work must be performed in a fume hood with proper safety equipment. And all apparatus must be glass to withstand the acids.\r
\r
Chemically, nitric acid is made by bubbling nitrogen dioxide into water. So the objective in this approach is to generate nitrogen dioxide. This can be done by reing hydrochloric acid, a nitrate salt and copper. Around 80grams of sodium nitrate, over 30 grams of copper and 100mL of hydrochloric acid (37% 12M) are the quantities needed. The ex amount isnt critical. For usable concentrations, the amount of water being converted should be small, around 20-50mL.\r
\r
Any source of nitrate is usable including potassium nitrate, ammonium nitrate and even nitrate-based fertilizers. You can use our previous video on testing for nitrates if you want to determine if yours can be used. \r
\r
The tricky part now is leading the gas into water. Two approaches are shown in the video. In the first approach three containers, such as jars are place inside each other to force the gas to go into the water. This is very inefficient but is very simple to do.\r
\r
The better approach is to lead the gas out of the generator through a tube and into a chilled container of water.\r
\r
The water thats converted into nitric acid can be replaced with hydrogen peroxide for better yield.\r
\r
The chemical waste thats generated contains the valuable copper used before and recovering it is worthwhile due to todays high copper prices. This is simply done by putting in enough aluminum metal that it res with all the acids and copper in solution to create a slurry of copper. This can be filtered to obtain a residue of copper. Its highly contaminated but can still be used to make more nitric acid.\r
\r
For further information on the chemistry type copper and nitric acid into google. The hydrochloric acid and nitrate salt behave as nitric acid (with nitrate from the salt and protons from the hydrochloric acid) and dissolve the copper releasing nitrogen dioxide gas.\r
\r
You can use other concentrations of hydrochloric acid but you need to decrease the amount of water added to keep the concentrations the same.\r
\r
\r
Finally, the last way of making pure nitric acid is to re concentrated sulfuric acid and a pure nitrate salt (NOT fertilizer) and heat it in a glass distillation apparatus to distill over the pure nitric acid. Stoichiometric quantities of both reagents are recommended for maximum yield. \r
\r

Muertes por accidentes en motos aumentaron dramáticamente en Colombia
El país pasó de 1’200.000 motos en 2000 a cerca de 5’440.000 en 2014
Una dura verdad presentó el Instituto Javeriano de Salud Pública a los motociclistas, las autoridades viales del país y las empresas que venden motos. En su estudio Patrón de mortalidad en motociclistas en Colombia 2000-2014, los investigadores javerianos establecieron que los motociclistas pasaron de representar el 24% de las muertes en siniestros viales en 2001 a más del 45% en 2014.

Entre el año 2000 y 2014, cerca de 28.000 motociclistas fallecieron, de los cuales 86,6% eran hombres. Mientras esto ocurría con los motociclistas, la tasa de mortalidad por lesiones causadas por el tránsito se reducía de 19,8 a 14,3 por 100.000 habitantes.

La mortalidad anual de motociclistas tuvo un crecimiento constante durante los 14 años. El incremento, plantearon los investigadores, puede deberse al aumento exponencial en el parque automotor de motos que se produjo en el país. En 2000 era de 1’200.000 y pasó a ser cerca de 5’440.000 en 2014.

Para 2013, cerca del 24% de los hogares en Colombia eran poseedores de motos. Las razones del aumento son diversas. Los datos resaltan las bajas cuotas para su financiación y pago; sólo representan una fracción del gasto mensual para una persona en el trasporte público; está el imaginario social sobre su economía, velocidad y sostenibilidad ambiental, lo cual las convierte en la primera opción para quienes devengan entre uno y dos salarios mínimos legales vigentes.

Los investigadores del Instituto Javeriano de Salud Pública analizaron los registros provenientes del Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística (DANE) y del Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal.

El departamento que registró más muertes fue Antioquia (17,5%), seguido de Valle (15,2%) y Bogotá (6,7%). Pero al ajustar las tasas de mortalidad por cada 100.000 habitantes otra es la realidad. Esta lista la encabezan Casanare (22,1), Arauca (17,5) y Huila. El grupo comprendido entre 15 y 34 años de edad concentró el 64,7% de las muertes.

“Existen algunas razones que pueden explicar el incremento en la compra y uso de motocicletas en el país”, señalaron los investigadores.

Entre las razones económicas sobresalen: la exención de impuestos para motos de 125 cc o menos, el no pago de peajes y que puede costar menos que movilizarse en transporte público. Adicionalmente, para muchos usuarios los tiempos de desplazamiento en motocicleta a través de las ciudades es menor al invertido en el trasporte público u otros tipos de vehículo particular.

“Un factor determinante es que muchos motociclistas no son conscientes de su mayor vulnerabilidad ante los siniestros viales”, apuntaron los especialistas, quienes consideran que en Colombia se deben realizar procesos de gestión, regulación del acceso, venta y disponibilidad de las motocicletas, al igual que regular la expedición de licencias de conducción y supervisar las escuelas de conducción que las expiden. Sin un control cabal de la legislación vial, creen que Colombia seguirá pagando con vidas el bajo precio de movilizarse en motocicleta.
