Cerebro: Reconocimiento facial del enfado

La dificultad en prestar atención, la hiperactividad y el comportamiento impulsivo en niños con Déficit de Atención e Hiperactividad (o TDAH) pueden desembocar en problemas sociales, y tienden a excluirlos de las actividades sociales de sus compañeros. Ahora, una nueva investigación apunta a que los niños afectados por TDAH tienen notablemente mermada la habilidad para reconocer la expresión facial de enfado. El equipo de Ryusuke Kakigi, del Instituto Nacional para las Ciencias Fisiológicas, uno de los Institutos Nacionales de Ciencias Naturales de Japón, así como Masami K. Yamaguchi e Hiroko Ichikawa, de la Universidad Chuo en el mismo país, identificó las características de la capacidad que niños con TDAH poseen para reconocer expresiones faciales. El análisis de dicha capacidad de reconocimiento se hizo mediante la medición de cambios hemodinámicos (cambios en el flujo sanguíneo) en el cerebro. El grupo de investigación mostró imágenes de una expresión feliz o una expresión enfadada a 13 niños con TDAH y a 13 niños con desarrollo normal, e identificaron el lugar del cerebro activado en ese momento. Utilizaron una técnica no invasiva de espectroscopia en el infrarrojo cercano para medir la actividad cerebral.

El problema que se plantea en un sistema de RAH es el de hacer cooperar un conjunto de informaciones que provienen de diversas fuentes de conocimiento (acústica, fonética, fonológica, léxica, sintáctica, semántica y pragmática), en presencia de ambigüedades, incertidumbres y errores inevitables para llegar a obtener una interpretación aceptable del mensaje acústico recibido.

Giro fusiforme: Reconocimiento de caras

Varias áreas cerebrales se relacionan con las caras. Una percibe la dirección de la mirada. Otra la carga emocional del rostro. El área de reconocimiento de caras se halla en el cortex temporal inferior (giro fusiforme). Es el área unimodal (exclusivamente visual) de mayor jerarquía. Es decir, es el área visual que procesa imágenes más complejas antes de integrarse con otros sistemas sensoriales como la audición, tacto u olor. Parece sin embargo que no funciona exclusivamente para reconocer caras. Cuando se entrena a los sujetos (hombres y monos) a reconocer objetos complejos y se convierten en expertos, también se usa el área de reconocimiento de caras por lo que podría en realidad ser un área de reconocimiento de patrones complejos.

Esquizofrenia y reconocimiento de caras

Las investigaciones previas han encontrado un deterioro en el reconocimiento facial y en la cognición en la esquizofrenia. Investigadores de los Departamentos de Psiquiatría y Psicología de la Universidad de Viena, compararon a pacientes con esquizofrenia y a controles sanos que se ofrecieron voluntariamente en tareas automatizadas de reconocimiento de la emoción, para determinar si el déficit en el procesamiento de la emoción estuvo correlacionado con el funcionamiento neurocognitivo.

Una Batería de Test Automatizados Neuropsicológicos (CNP) fue administrada a 40 pacientes (25 hombres, 15 mujeres, edad media ± SD 30.4± 8.1) con esquizofrenia (DSM-IV, 15 pacientes de primer episodio y 25 enfermos crónicos) y 43 voluntarios sanos.

Una versión alemana del Test PENN de Discriminación Facial, Diferenciación y Memoria, que incluyó las caras felices, tristes y neutras fue utilizada. Además, probaron a todos los pacientes con una batería neuropsicológica estándar y los clasificaron según los síntomas positivos y negativos.

Los pacientes con esquizofrenia obtuvieron peores resultados que los sujetos control en todas las tareas de reconocimiento de la emoción (p< 0.01). Los autores encontraron índices de error más altos para la discriminación de la emoción en las caras felices (p<0.02) y caras femeninas felices (p< 0.01), para la diferenciación las caras tristes frente a las felices (p< 0.001) y para la memoria facial (p< 0.04). Una peor ejecución en cuanto a la discriminación de la emoción y la memoria facial correlacionó con la severidad de los síntomas negativos, la abstracción- flexibilidad (p< 0.001), la memoria verbal (p< 0.01) y el procesamiento del lenguaje (p< 0.001).

El estudio no reveló un déficit específico para el reconocimiento de las emociones en la esquizofrenia. Estos resultados prestan apoyo a la idea de que las dificultades en el reconocimiento de emociones están relacionadas en la esquizofrenia con déficits cognitivos.

La habilidad de los jóvenes para decodificar las reglas sociales y reconocer las emociones, particularmente la rabia y la tristeza, se desarrolla entre los 12 y los 14 años, según descubrimiento de investigadores de la Universidad College de Londres y el Instituto de Salud Infantil.
"Parece que ésta es una función cerebral que se desarrolla en ese momento", "Es un fenómeno con base biológica del que, afortunadamente, ellos se recuperan", agregó. Entonces, más que los adolescentes sean rebeldes, deliberadamente obstinados o difíciles, es posible que a su cerebro le resulte imposible detectar signos sutiles de padres, maestros y otros adultos, o decodificarlos correctamente.
Los mismos circuitos cerebrales implicados en el reconocimiento de expresiones faciales se asocian también a la decodificación de tonos de voz, según Skuse.
"La habilidad de interpretar un tono de voz irritado o una expresión facial de enojo puede deteriorarse durante ese periodo de adolescencia temprana", agregó el experto.
Pero el problema parece desaparecer a los 16 o 17 años. Skuse, quien presentó su descubrimiento en la conferencia de la Asociación Británica para el Avance de la Ciencia en la capital de Irlanda, llegó a estas conclusiones tras estudiar a 6 mil niños como parte de una investigación sobre el autismo, condición que afecta a muchos más varones que niñas.
A todos los que participaron del estudio, de entre 6 y 16 años, se les pidió que desarrollaran ciertas tareas como recordar rostros, establecer contacto visual y distinguir emociones mirando fotografías de caras expresando felicidad, tristeza, rabia, miedo, sorpresa y disgusto.
"Todas ésas son habilidades relacionadas con nuestra capacidad de interactuar apropiadamente con otros en sociedad y supuestamente son deficientes en personas autistas", dijo Skuse.

Not having too much success on the charts (except for "The Ball Game" (1952), which became one of Specialty's best selling gospel records), Carr grew increasingly unhappy with the straight gospel direction of her career and pleaded with Rupe to let her record "pops, jumps, ballads, and semi-blues". Rupe relented and from 1955 to 1959 Carr recorded two dozen rock & roll and R&B sides for Specialty, which, like her gospel songs, she mostly wrote herself.
