Residents and Emergency Crews Evacuate After New Fuego Volcano Eruption
Officials have ordered new evacuations around Guatemala’s Fuego volcano after a second major eruption within three days sparked panic on Tuesday, June 5.
The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) tweeted that residents should evacuate in the communities of La Reyna, El Rodeo, Cañaveral I and IV, Hunapu, Magnoli, after a further eruption was reported.
These videos were captured by the the country’s Municipal Firefighters near the city of Escuintla. The first video shows firefighters evacuating highway 14, while the Fuego volcano spews a cloud of ash in the background.
The second video shows firefighters, residents and other emergency services evacuating from a petrol station on highway 14 near the volcano.
A spokesman for the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology warned that a new pyroclastic flow occurred at 2.25pm in the Las Lahas canyon, and El Jute area, La Prensa Libre reported.
He said there was a risk the flow could reach the Palín-Escuintla highway. The highway was subsequently closed to motorists, Guatemalan news site Soy502 reported.
