La descripción del miembro fantasma ya fue realizada hace siglos por Paré, Descartes y Von Haller. Los estudios sistemáticos más antiguos sobre este trastorno fueron realizados por Gueniot en 1861, Weir Mitchell en 1872, Charcot en 1892, Abbatucci en 1894, Pitres en 1897, Head y Holmes en 1911 y Pick en 1915. La experiencia de miembro fantasma constituye un claro argumento a favor de la existencia de un esquema corporal mental que subyace y modifica la experiencia con nuestro propio cuerpo. Después de una amputación, es muy frecuente, hasta en un 90% de los sujetos, seguir percibiendo el miembro perdido. Pero habitualmente, conforme pasa el tiempo, esta sensación va desapareciendo. Cuando persiste durante años, puede aparecer sólo de forma intermitente bajo ciertas condiciones. Ocurre menos frecuentemente en retraso mental y en situaciones de estrés. Se ha descrito incluso una negación de la amputación y una ausencia de las experiencias del miembro fantasma.

Un equipo de 36 cirujanos ha iniciado este martes en un hospital del sur de la India la operación de una niña de dos años, Lakshmi, que nació con cuatro brazos y cuatro piernas, según informa la cadena de televisión IBN. Fuentes del hospital han señalado que, siete horas después del inicio de la intervención, "todo va bien". "Está respondiendo bien, aunque han surgido complicaciones", ha dicho la portavoz del hospital, Siva Rudrayya. Después de que muchos médicos se negaran a operarla diciendo que era muy arriesgado, un cirujano del hospital Sparsh, en la ciudad sureña india de Bangalore, se ha prestado a llevar a cabo la intervención. "La cirugía es muy arriesgada. (...) Es una situación especial", ha declarado el cirujano, Sharan Shivraj Patil. "Primero, tenemos que separar la gemela parásita de Lakshmi. Igualmente importante será la reconstrucción de toda la estructura pélvica. Hay entre 20 y 30% de posibilidad de perder a la niña", explicó Patil.

Regeneracion y supervivencia: La cola del Geco

Increíbles capacidades en el mundo animal sirven de inspiración a científicos que buscan promover soluciones cada vez más sofisticadas en el ámbito de la medicina:la regeneración de miembros amputados y adhesivos biodegradables. De cerca se estudia a la salamandra adulta,que regenera sus miembros indefinidamente tras una amputación. La clave está en la formación de un blastema gracias a las células del tipo de los fibroblastos que en la salamandra “vuelven a un estado embrionario” y finalmente terminan desarrollando un nuevo miembro. Si bien los fibroblastos por sí mismos no son suficientes para lograr la regeneración,en la salamandra mantienen una memoria genética que les permite formar nuevamente el miembro,cuestión que no ocurre en mamíferos en los que promueven la cicatrización. Otra de las claves es el hecho de que las células en la zona de amputación deben “saber” a dónde están en relación con todo el miembro.

Científicos estadounidenses han descubierto que la ausencia de un gen concreto -el denominado p21- otorga a los mamíferos la capacidad de regenerar sus tejidos. En algunos experimentos realizados sobre ratones, se demostró que quitándoles este gen los roedores podían regenerar sus orejas perforadas. Estos roedores mostraron un potencial curativo similar al que poseen algunos gusanos, esponjas y salamandras. Se trata de un hallazgo podría acelerar los procesos curativos en humanos. ¿Esto significa que podremos recuperar partes dañadas de nuestros organismos?

Felicidad: Cerebro y emociones

La principal causa de la infelicidad del ser humano estaría en nuestro sistema límbico o cerebro emocional, una estructura que gestiona respuestas emocionales ante estímulos sensoriales. Toda la información que recibimos del mundo externo a través de los sentidos se impregna de matices emocionales, de placer o dolor, lo que realmente nos impide ser felices". En definitiva, "el objetivo final en el diseño de todo cerebro es la lucha por la supervivencia".
"El ser humano, cuyo cerebro pesa aproximadamente un 1400 g y posee una complejísima organización funcional, ha atisbado la conciencia de sí mismo", lo que le lleva a plantearse dos vías para conseguir un tipo determinado de felicidad: una de ellas consiste en mantener el equilibrio entre el placer y el dolor, pues "ambos extremos producen infelicidad", y la otra, "más drástica y quizás más auténtica", en aislarse del mundo, evitando interaccionar con él y que la información sensorial alcance, en el cerebro, el sistema emocional.

Miembros fantasma

Las experiencias de miembros fantasma no solamente ocurren tras la pérdida de extremidades, sino también tras la pérdida de otros órganos como los ojos, los dientes, los genitales externos o la mama. Esto último ocurre hasta en el 40% de las mujeres tras mastectomía; y en un tercio de ellas, la sensación fantasma está limitada al pezón. Esta tendencia a la percepción de la parte corporal más distal está en consonancia con la misma tendencia a percibir, en las extremidades, la parte más distal de las misma, la mano y los dedos [18]. Sin embargo, la resección de un órgano interno no produce el fenómeno de miembro fantasma.
Después de una amputación, es muy frecuente, hasta en un 90% de los sujetos, seguir percibiendo el miembro perdido. Pero habitualmente, conforme pasa el tiempo, esta sensación va desapareciendo. Cuando persiste durante años, puede aparecer sólo de forma intermitente bajo ciertas condiciones. Ocurre menos frecuentemente en retraso mental y en situaciones de estrés. Se ha descrito incluso una negación de la amputación y una ausencia de las experiencias del miembro fantasma como parte de un síndrome más generalizado de negación de enfermedad.

En la descripción del miembro fantasma es importante distinguir dos grupos de alteraciones:
- En primer lugar, la experiencia del miembro fantasma como una percepción del miembro amputado en lo que se refiere a sus características espaciales. En este sentido constituiría la persistencia del esquema mental corporal.
- En segundo lugar, a diferencia de lo anterior, estarían las sensaciones percibidas procedentes del miembro fantasma (parestesias, dolor, sensación de pesadez, de calor, de frío, calambres, etc.).

Neuroplasticidad: Dolor fantasma y neuronas espejo

Cuando un miembro es amputado, los pacientes continúan sintiendo vívidamente la presencia de su miembro perdido como un "miembro fantasma". Al comienzo de los años 90, Ramachandran comenzó a utilizar este fenómeno como una sonda para explorar la plasticidad neurológica en el cerebro humano adulto. Ramachandran sugirió que los miembros fantasma podrían ser debidos a cambios en el cerebro más que a cambios en los nervios periféricos. Ramachandran demostró que cuando un brazo es amputado, el área cortical liberado que correspondía al brazo perdido es "invadido" por neuronas que responden a la estimulación en la cara que normalmente sólo se activarían en la región de la cara en el homúnculo cortical. Las señales de la cara se activarían entonces en el área de la mano original del córtex y los centros cerebrales superiores interpretarían esta activación como proveniente de la mano fantasma. Los resultados prueban que el cerebro es altamente plástico y moldeable.

Africa, with its many nations and tribes, is very rich in different wedding traditions. An old African proverb says, "A man without a wife is like a vase without flowers."
The Ndebele people live in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Mother-in-law of the Ndebele bride makes her a "jocolo". The Jocolo is a five-paneled, beaded goatskin apron. During ceremonies this apron is worn by all married women.

The Shona people live in Zimbabwe and southern Mozambique. Dowry or "roora" is a regular part of their weddings. It is paid to the bride's family as a sign of respect. The bride decides when she will go to her groom. She can arrive at night with her female cousins escorting her. She arrives during the day when she wants to surprise her future husband. She then wears white from head to toe. It is believed that by doing so nobody can see her.

As soon as members of groom's family notice her they start dancing and ululating. The groom's family begins preparations for a party. It takes some time, so the bride is encouraged to keep walking through the village. People are very happy as her arrival and giving birth to babies is going to enlarge their community.

The procession ends when the mother-in-law escorts the bride to her new home. There the bride gets presents and is being pleaded to remove her veil. It is a sign for the party to begin. Such parties last all through the night.

The Yoruba people live in Nigeria and some other parts of Western Africa. Polygamous marriages are common in the Wodabee nation of Niger. Marriages called „coogal“ are arranged by parents during couple's infancy. There are also marriages as result of love. Such marriages are called „teegal“.

Groom's family offers a price to the bride's family. If it is excepted the bride and groom are married. A bride lives with her husband until her pregnancy. Then she returns to her mother's home, where she will remain for the next three to four years.

With the birth of a baby the woman becomes a boofeydo or "someone who has made an error." Being a boofeydo means that she can not see or speak with her husband. The husband can not express any interest in her or the baby.

After two to three years, the woman will be able to visit her husband, but not live with him. Finally, when the woman's mother buys everything that is needed for bride's home, she and the baby return to the husband.
Between 1000 and 1500 Karo (Kara) people live on the east banks of the Omo River in south Ethiopia. To enhance the beauty of the Karo bride her abdomen is tattooed with different symbols. The Karo man can have as many wives as he can afford. Usually he has two or three wives.
