Los primeros mamiferos: El hienodonte

El hienodonte es un género extinto de mamíferos carnívoros. Aparecieron a fines del Eoceno, hace 41 millones de años, y vivieron hasta el Mioceno, hace unos 21 millones de años. Se extendieron por casi todos los continentes, excepto en América del Sur, Australia y la Antártida. Algunas de las especies de este género llegaron a alcanzar la estatura de un rinoceronte actual, mientras que otros tenían un tamaño considerablemente más pequeño (en total, hay más de 20 especies dentro de este género, por lo que hay algunas diferencias entre ellas). Entre los rasgos que mantenían en común, destaca principalmente su alimentación únicamente carnívora. Su cabeza era bastante grande y alargada, pero su cerebro era muy pequeño en comparación con ella. Su cuello bastante pequeño (mucho menor que su cráneo, por ejemplo), pero el resto del cuerpo era largo y robusto, terminado en una extensa cola.

Mamiferos: El juego

El juego aparece en los mamíferos. Los mamíferos juegan para aprender y por el mero placer de jugar. De hecho la principal función del juego es aprender. Los mamíferos se caracterizan por un cerebro evolucionado, infancia larga, cuidado parental, amamantamiento de las crías, cacería en grupo, división social y no genética de trabajo. Los mamíferos juegan a cazar en grupo, definir jerarquías, explorar, dividirse el trabajo, entre otros. El juego entre los mamíferos (caninos, felinos, acuáticos, primates) se basa en la imitación y en la exploración por ensayo y error. En los mamíferos hay una ausencia total de juego simbólico.

Los mamíferos actuales descienden de los sinápsidos primitivos, grupo de tetrápodos amniotas que comenzó a florecer a principios del Pérmico, hace unos 280 millones de años, y continuaron dominando sobre los «reptiles» terrestres hasta hace unos 245 millones de años (principios del Triásico), cuando empezaron a despuntar los primeros dinosaurios. Debido a su superioridad competitiva, estos últimos hicieron desaparecer a la mayoría de los sinápsidos. No obstante, algunos sobrevivieron y se convirtieron en los primeros mamíferos verdaderos hacia finales del Triásico, hace unos 200 millones de años.

El desarrollo de un tegumento complejo que los proteja, de un aparato locomotor capaz de ahorrar energía durante el movimiento y disminuir la superficie corporal, y de los órganos de los sentidos que mejoren las capacidades vitales fue el primer paso de los mamíferos para comenzar el control de nuevos ecosistemas. Al aumentar la movilidad, era necesario ahorrar energía, desarrollándose un aparato digestivo más complejo y eficaz, que a la vez que disminuía el tiempo de digestión, incrementaba el nivel de aprovechamiento de los alimentos. Por esta razón, el aparato circulatorio se hizo más poderoso y especializado acarreando el perfeccionamiento del respiratorio, que aumentó de tamaño y capacidad de intercambio de oxígeno. Y en esta cadena de transformaciones, todos los aparatos y sistemas orgánicos fueron desarrollándose y especializándose durante un largo período de más de ciento sesenta millones de años

Buceo en apnea: Reflejo de inmersion de los mamiferos

El reflejo de buceo mamífero puede permitir a las víctimas de sumersión sobrevivir tras períodos prolongados de sumersión en agua fría. Identificado en mamíferos marinos inicialmente, este reflejo disminuye la frecuencia cardíaca y produce vasoconstricción de las arterias periféricas, derivando la sangre oxigenada desde las extremidades y el sistema digestivo hacia el corazón y el cerebro. A ello se agrega que las necesidades de oxígeno de los tejidos y órganos son más reducidas en el agua fría, lo que prolonga el tiempo de supervivencia. Los factores clave que afectan a la probabilidad de sobrevivir a una sumersión sin lesión permanente son la duración de la sumersión, la temperatura del agua, la edad de la víctima (el reflejo de buceo es más activo en niños) y la rapidez de la reanimación.

Entre los placentarios esta radiación originó: los carnívoros, los ungulados, los roedores, y grupos tales como ballenas, delfines, murciélagos, los insectívoros y los primates. Los mayores órdenes de los mamíferos se desarrollaron en este período, incluyendo a los Primates a los cuales pertenecemos los humanos. Nosotros somos mamíferos, placentarios y miembros del orden de los primates. Si bien tenemos diferencias significativas con los otros primates compartimos una historia evolutiva que incluye caracteres tales como: pulgar oponible, visión estereoscópica, grandes cerebros, y uñas que reemplazan las zarpas.

The BBC reports that scientists in Egypt have identified
a new species of four-legged whale that is believed
to have existed about 43 million years ago.
The fossil of the amphibious Phiomicetus anubis was uncovered in Egypt's Western Desert.
More specifically, the partial skeleton was discovered in the Fayum Depression.
The species was named after the ancient
Egyptian jackal-headed god of the dead,
as the skull resembles that of Anubis.
According to the BBC, modern whales evolved
from land-dwelling deer-like mammals
over the course of 10 million years.
Phiomicetus anubis is estimated to have weighed over 1300 pounds and been 10 feet in length.
The massive creature was able to both
walk on land and swim in the water.
It was analyzed by scientists
at Mansoura University.
Despite the area currently being a desert,
it was once covered by a sea and

BIRD LIFE
South Africa is home to approximately 175 endemic bird species, as well as hundreds more species. Notable endemic varieties include the Black Oystercatcher, Blue Crane, Cape Parrot, Cape Vulture, Forest Canary, Ground Woodpecker, Jackal Buzzard, Knysna Turaco, Namaqua Sandgrouse, Protea Seedeater, Southern Bald Ibis, Southern Pale Chanting Goshawk, Whitebacked Mousebird, and the Yellow-breasted Pipit.

Avian enthusiasts are well-rewarded when they visit this country, and are reminded to bring their binoculars and identification aids.

MAMMALS
There are about 230 mammal species to be found in South Africa, which include a collection of impressive predators. These make for fabulous sightings on any game drive or safari. Of these hundreds of species, there are two that are critically endangered (De Winton’s Golden Mole and the Riverine Rabbit) and 11 that are endangered (including the African Wild Dog, the Mountain Zebra, Sei Whale and Blue Whale). These numbers are in line with the IUCN statistics.

Endemic mammals include the Cape Elephant Shrew, Cape Mole-rat, Cape Grysbok, Bontebok, Cape Kudu, Springbok and the Cape Horseshoe Bat.
