  • Semi Slams Vehicle With Family Inside

As we enter winter weather season we also enter a season of dangerous driving. Remember to Slow down and use extreme caution during storms.\r
    \r
A note of caution from Montana Highway Patrol: We have made the decision to release the following video in the hopes that it will encourage all drivers to exercise caution and lower their speeds especially during inclement weather. The video features dash-cam footage showing aof crashes that occurred during a blizzard on December 28th, new near Missoula.\r
    \r
MHP Trooper Wade Palmer and Cadet (now Trooper) Timothy Templeton arrived at the scene of a crash involving a mother and her two small children. Conditions were hazardous as the crash occurred during a blizzard. The dash-cam footage captures aof subsequent collisions occurring after the initial crash that disabled the familys vehicle. In the first subsequent collision, a semi-truck hits the passenger vehicle parked on the shoulder of the road, causing the mother to be ejected from the vehicle. She landed in the highway median. Trooper Palmer located the victim in the median and rendered aid. While that was happening, Cadet Templeton saw an out-of-control truck and trailer headed directly toward Trooper Palmer and the victim. Templeton shouted a warning and Trooper Palmer was able to pull himself and the victim to safety within seconds, thereby saving his life and that of the mother. Thankfully, everyone survived. The mother and her two children are on the road to recovery.\r
    \r
The Montana Highway Patrol recommends that when driving in winter weather, drivers slow down, increase their following distance, allow themselves more time to get to their destination, brake gently and have patience.\r

  • China faces unusual climate

Snowstorms, sandstorms, and strong rainfall. Since the end of last year, severe weather has been hitting China around the country and disturbing people's daily life. On Wednesday, a spokesman from the China Meteorological Administration sums up the phenomenon and their effects on people's lives.

In the middle of April, when normally there are spring blossoms everywhere, snowstorms blanketed areas of Inner Mongolia. The spring snows add to the region's worst winter in 60 years. In its neighboring provinces, Heilongjiang and Jilin, rare blizzards also struck.

On Wednesday, at a press conference held by the China Meteorological Administration, it is announced that the average temperature of the entire nation is 8.7 degree Celsius, 1.3 lower than usual. And it's the lowest since 1961.

April has been the month with the most rainfall since 1974. The drought in China's southwestern regions has been greatly eased. But as strong rains hit the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and some parts of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, warnings against flooding have been announced.

At the same time, strong winds and sandstorms scour most of China's northern regions. The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Inner Mongolia, Jilin, Gansu, central Hebei and Shaanxi provinces have all received blankets of dust. The sand not only hampers transportation, and agriculture production, but also does great harm to people's health.

  • ESA Euronews: When weather becomes climate ES

We constantly track our weather as it fluctuates day-to-day, but determining patterns over time can help us differentiate exactly when 'weather' becomes 'climate'.

Climate change may be visibly changing our world, but it cannot be charged with every meteorological peculiarity given the inherent chaos of the atmosphere. The only way to make sense of these changes is by looking for trends, and these days we have a perfect vantage point from space.

The world of weather watching is ruled by an armada of satellites, and Eumetsat in Germany owns and runs Europe's fleet of high-precision machines. These hugely powerful devices are capable of mapping both high resolution temperature and humidity measurements, and different images of Earth in near real-time.

Thanks to these technological behemoths, we now know more about our weather than ever before; but understanding climate is a different matter.
