El esperma humano congelado es viable para reproducción fuera de la Tierra

Barcelona, 24 jun (EFE).- Investigadores de Dexeus Mujer y de la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña (UPC) han demostrado que el semen congelado mantiene su viabilidad en condiciones de ingravidez en el espacio, por lo que podría servir para hacer reproducciones de la especie humana fuera de la Tierra.
La investigación, presentada este martes en el 35º Congreso de la European Society of Human Rreproduction and Embriology (ESHRE) en Viena (Austria), es un primer paso de un proyecto más amplio para ver la viabilidad de crear bancos de gametos en el espacio y reproducir la especie humana fuera del planeta", ha reconocido la doctora que ha liderado el trabajo, Montserrat Boada.
Varios estudios han descrito cómo afecta la ingravidez a estructuras celulares y moleculares, al sistema cardiovascular, músculo-esquelético, nervioso y endocrino, "pero su impacto sobre las células germinales, como los espermatozoides o los óvulos, y sobre la reproducción humana no se conoce con detalle", según Boada.
Por este motivo, investigadores de Dexeus Mujer de Barcelona e ingenieros de la UPC han analizado si la exposición a condiciones de microgravedad similares a las que se dan en el espacio exterior afectan a diversas muestras de esperma congelado.
El trabajo ha demostrado que la microgravedad no afecta a la viabilidad del esperma humano congelado, ya que "la concentración, movilidad, vitalidad y fragmentación del ADN espermático no sale alterado en ninguno de estos tests, comparados con las propiedades en condiciones de gravedad de la Tierra", ha explicado a Efe Boada.
"El año pasado, la NASA anunció un estudio en esta misma línea denominado Micro-11 que investiga los efectos de la microgravedad en la Estación Espacial Internacional, pero todavía no ha publicado nada de los resultados obtenidos", ha puntualizado Boada, que ha asegurado que "este es el primer estudio sobre los efectos de la microgravedad en muestras de esperma humano congelado".
"Si en un futuro tenemos que reproducirnos fuera de la Tierra, ¿cómo debería ser? Tal vez la reproducción asistida sería la técnica más comúnmente utilizada", ha sugerido Boada.
El estudio se ha hecho con diez muestras de semen de diez voluntarios sanos y cada una de ellas se dividió en dos fracciones: una para el estudio en condiciones de microgravedad y otra de control.
