Bhopal (India), 3 dic (EFE/EPA).- (Imagen: Sanjeev Gupta) Cientos de personas protestaron en la ciudad india de Bhopal por el 31 aniversario de la tragedia que mató a cerca de 25.000 personas, tras la fuga de gas tóxico de una planta de pesticidas de la compañía estadounidense Union Carbide Corporation.

Los sobrevivientes y familiares de las víctimas reclamaron al gobierno indio mayor asistencia y reparaciones frente a los efectos de la tragedia, que, además, siguen causando estragos en las nuevas generaciones.

Parte de los activos de Union Carbide fueron adquiridos por la empresa Dow Chemical, por lo que las protestas también se dirigieron contra esta compañía estadounidense.

Desastre de Bhopal: Nube toxica

El desastre de Bhopal, ocurrido el 3 de diciembre de 1984 en la región de Bhopal (India), se originó al producirse una fuga de isocianato de metilo en una fábrica de pesticidas propiedad de un 51% de la compañía estadounidense Union Carbide (parte de cuyos activos fueron posteriormente adquiridos por Dow Chemical) y del restante 49%, del gobierno de la India. Existen diferentes teorías que se desprenden de las investigaciones realizadas por la misma empresa y por la justicia. Una de ellas dice que el accidente se produjo al no tomarse las debidas precauciones durante las tareas de limpieza y mantenimiento de la planta, lo que hizo que el agua a presión utilizada, cristales de cloruro sódico, restos metálicos y otras impurezas que la misma arrastraba, entrasen en contacto con el gas almacenado, iniciando una reacción exotérmica que provocó la apertura por sobrepresión de las válvulas de seguridad de los tanques y con ello la liberación a la atmósfera del gas tóxico.
