Regreso al Pasado TV 1x15: Neo Geo Pocket Color

 
Hoy tenemos con nosotros la que muchos consideran mejor portátil lanzada en los 90, pese a que acabó siendo una víctima más de la imbatible Game Boy. Hablamos de Neo Geo Pocket, sistema desarrollado por la gran SNK como su primer y único intento de entrar en un mercado en el que Nintendo era amo y señor absoluto prácticamente desde los lejanos tiempos de las Game & Watch. Su desarrollo comenzó en 1996, y su diseño deja claro que SNK había estudiado a conciencia las razones del fracaso de la Lynx de Atari y la Game Gear de Sega: falta de ergonomía y el enorme consumo de pilas que demandaban. Así, Neo Geo Pocket poseía un diseño muy ergonómico y reducido, cabiendo perfectamente en un bolsillo sin tener por ello que renunciar a una disposición horizontal frente a la verticalidad de Game Boy. SNK consiguió regular el consumo de energía para que la portátil necesitara únicamente dos pilas AAA, las cuales daban para un total de 40 horas de juego. Eso sí, para conseguir la autonomía que debe exigirse a toda portátil, la compañía nipona tuvo que renunciar a cualquier clase de iluminación para la pantalla, así como a mostrar gráficos en color.
Cuando finalmente Neo Geo Pocket llegó al mercado japonés en 1998, la principal crítica que recibió por parte de usuarios y prensa especializada fue precisamente su carencia de color. Y es que Nintendo, tras casi una década usando el mismo hardware de base para Game Boy y sus posteriores revisiones, acabó lanzando ese mismo año al mercado la verdadera evolución de su histórica portátil, la Game Boy Color, que atesoraba como principales virtudes una mayor potencia… y pantalla a color. A pesar de su naturaleza monocroma, Neo Geo Pocket mostraba hasta 8 tonos de grises, lo cual permitía poner en pantalla unos gráficos nítidos y repletos de detalle, y atesoraba en su interior una mayor potencia bruta que la también recién nacida GBC. Sin embargo, ni siquiera un grandioso stick, perfecto para juegos de lucha, y un catálogo inicial en el que aparecían maravillas como The King of Fighters Round One (basado en KOF ’97), Neo Geo Cup ’98 y Samurai Shodown sirvieron para hacerse con el beneplácito del público.
En lugar de rendirse, SNK decidió poner toda la carne en el asador, abandonando su Neo Geo Pocket para desarrollar la nueva, flamante y mejorada Neo Geo Pocket Color, lanzada al mercado japonés en 1999, y contando además con desembarco occidental a diferencia del primer modelo. La principal novedad de esta nueva portátil era, tal y como su nombre dejaba claro, una pantalla a todo color que atesoraba una paleta de 4096 tonalidades, siendo capaz de presentar en pantalla hasta 146 de manera simultánea. El tamaño de esta nueva portátil era ligeramente mayor, pero SNK se las ingenió para hacer que funcionara con dos pilas AA en lugar de las AAA de la NGP original, manteniendo la autonomía de hasta 40 horas de juego ininterrumpido.

The player controls Mario on his quest to save Princess Peach and Dinosaur Land from the series' antagonist Bowser and the Koopalings. The gameplay is similar to that of earlier Super Mario games: players control Mario through a series of levels in which the goal is to reach the goalpost at the end.

Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development developed the game, led by director Takashi Tezuka and producer and series creator Shigeru Miyamoto. It is the first Mario game for the SNES and was designed to make the most of the console's technical features. The development team had more freedom compared to the series installments for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Yoshi was conceptualised during the development of the NES games but was not used until Super Mario World due to hardware limitations.

Super Mario World is often considered one of the best games in the series and is cited as one of the greatest video games ever made. It sold more than twenty million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling SNES game. It also led to an animated television series of the same name. The game has been re-released on multiple occasions: It was part of the 1994 compilation Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World for the SNES and was re-released for the Game Boy Advance as Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 in 2001, on the Virtual Console for the Wii, Wii U, and New Nintendo 3DS consoles, and as part of the Super NES Classic Edition. In 2019, it was released for Nintendo Switch Online as part of the classic games service.

Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf, commonly known as Desert Strike, is a shoot 'em up video game released by Electronic Arts (EA) in February 1992 for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. The game was later released on several other formats such as the SNES, including a much upgraded version for the Amiga home computer. The game was inspired by the Gulf War and depicts a conflict between an insane Middle Eastern dictator, General Kilbaba, and the United States. The player controls a lone Apache helicopter and attempts to destroy enemy weapons and installations, rescue hostages and capture enemy personnel, while managing supplies of fuel and ammunition.

The lead designer, Mike Posehn, had no video game experience prior to developing Desert Strike. Inspired by Choplifter, he aimed to create a nonlinear game with smoothly animated vehicles. Posehn, a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, developed a camera system with momentum to mimic realistic helicopter movements. Three-dimensional (3D) modeling was used to generate the vehicle sprites, which were later touched up on the pixel level with color.

Desert Strike was a strong commercial success: it was a chart-topping best seller and at the time Electronics Arts' highest ever selling game. The game also received a favourable critical response, with several magazines awarding scores of over 90%. Reviewers praised the game's enjoyability, mix of action and strategy, graphics and sound. There was some controversy regarding the game's subject matter, with commentators criticising it as in poor taste due the proximity of its release to the recently ended Gulf War.
