Fundéu BBVA: “azotea”, mejor que “rooftop”

Madrid, 12 abr (EFE).- El término español "azotea" es una alternativa al anglicismo "rooftop", señala la Fundación del Español Urgente, promovida por la Agencia EFE y BBVA.
En los medios de comunicación aparecen frases como "Los mejores rooftops para tocar el cielo de Madrid", "Los rooftops nos ofrecen la mejor oferta para disfrutar de un buen cóctel" y "El complejo cuenta con un bar y un rooftop restaurant".
La palabra inglesa "rooftop" se refiere a la superficie exterior del tejado plano de un edificio por el que es posible caminar, es decir, una "azotea".
En textos en español es cada vez más frecuente encontrar este anglicismo, así como los más precisos "rooftop restaurant" y "rooftop bar", para designar a las terrazas de la última planta de los edificios en las que hay bares o restaurantes. En estos casos lo apropiado sería escribir "bar" o "restaurante" y añadir "de azotea" o "en la azotea", dependiendo del contexto.
Así, en los ejemplos anteriores lo apropiado habría sido escribir "Las mejores azoteas para tocar el cielo de Madrid", "Los bares de azotea nos ofrecen la mejor oferta para disfrutar de un buen cóctel" y "El complejo cuenta con un bar y un restaurante en la azotea".
Sin embargo, si se prefiere utilizar el anglicismo, lo adecuado sería escribirlo en cursiva o, si no se dispone de este tipo de letra, entrecomillado.
La Fundéu BBVA (www.fundeu.es), que trabaja asesorada por la Real Academia Española y cuyo principal objetivo es el buen uso del español en los medios de comunicación, cuenta con la colaboración, además, del Instituto Cervantes, la Fundación San Millán, Accenture y Prodigioso Volcán.

Metanews: In New York, a crystal ball with 32,000 lights descended at midnight, setting off a wild and noisy confetti-filled New Year's celebration. Nearly a million revellers crowded New York's Time Square to witness the traditional dazzling ball drop and welcome in the new year. The crowd hollered as a ball with 32-thousand lights descended in the run-up to midnight local time (0500 GMT). The celebration took place just days after a blizzard paralysed the city and amid security concerns eight months after a Pakistani immigrant tried to detonate a car bomb in Times Square. Police had a strict security plan in place, with sealed manhole covers, counter-snipers on rooftops and checkpoints for partygoers.
