Londres es una ciudad extensa , de escasos rascacielos y se encuentra espacialmente muy extendida. El desafío de un aspirante es el de conocer lugares y nombres de las calles en toda su extensión. Si el aspirante logra su objetivo su cerebro habrá crecido al menos en una parte. El hipocampo, una estructura en forma de caballito de mar, que pertenece al sistema límbico de cerebro, es crucial para muchas funciones de la memoria y el aprendizaje, incluido el procesamiento de relaciones espaciales en el medio ambiente. Un estudio de IRM publicado en el año 2000 por científicos de la Universidad College, en Londres, muestra que en los taxistas londinenses, la parte posterior del hipocampo, estaba agrandada en comparación con individuos comunes. Esto pone en tela de juicio el criterio de que el cerebro humano no puede crecer.
