  • UN calls for speedy transition to clean energy at Expo 2017

Astana, Jun 13 (EFE).- The UN on Tuesday opened its pavilion at EXPO 2017, whose theme is "Future Energy," by calling on governments, businesses and cities worldwide to speed up the transition toward clean energy.

"Energy is the most critical sector for addressing climate challenges. Energy sector transformation is therefore critical for countries to achieve their climate and development goals and objectives," UN Commissioner-General for Expo 2017 Cihan Sultanoglu said in Kazakhstan's capital, Astana.

"We need to maintain, strengthen and support the transition in all possible ways," the UN official said.

UN agencies are using the EXPO to showcase the importance of ensuring universal access to energy, global best practices in the reduction of carbon emissions, greening the economy and adopting innovative technologies.

"I hope the EXPO will advance dialogues between governments, climate scientists and engineers to find practical solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions while generating energy," Sultanoglu said.

At the UN Pavilion, visitors can operate a micro-hydroplant model or dive into Kazakhstan's solar energy Atlas. A separate display will show how oasis irrigation works, helping to provide water to arid regions using solar and wind power. EFE
